A typical GoIWx SharePoint deployment is distributed across 3 servers so there is no single point of failure. Our deployment is protected by clustered Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) firewalls, an ISA 2006 Server, and by Microsoft ForeFront Antivirus for SharePoint. All data in SharePoint is contained inside databases and is presented to the web via a web server. All communications with the web server and each client connecting is done over HTTPS which prevents anyone from intercepting any data, similar to how online banking is done. All databases are backed up daily and stored in a secure network location, independent from physical servers.
You can store almost any file type in a SharePoint site and because it is delivered via the internet anyone, who is permitted, can access documents and collaborate together as a team. Many companies that collaborate with vendors/clients or for Internal employee collaboration, use SharePoint to accomplish this.
